Air Artists created three spectacular 40-foot giant inflatable  replicas of global football stars Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal and Christian Pulisic for FOX Sports.
Designed to build excitement ahead of the 2026 World Cup, the monumental sculptures transformed three of the sport’s most recognisable players into unmissable pieces of inflatable art.
Each custom inflatable replica was individually hand-painted by Air Artists’ specialist artists, combining large-scale inflatable construction with detailed dimensional replication to create instantly recognisable likenesses with exceptional visual impact.
FOX Sports wanted a bold physical activation that would connect with football fans, attract attention and create highly shareable moments in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup.
The campaign centred around three major names in international football: reigning World Cup champion Lionel Messi, Spanish star Lamine Yamal and United States captain Christian Pulisic.
At 40 feet tall, each inflatable needed to deliver the monumental scale required for an international sports campaign while ensuring the individual player remained immediately recognisable.
Capturing their distinctive facial features, proportions, expressions, hairstyles and national kits was therefore central to the brief, requiring a combination of specialist inflatable construction and detailed hand-painted artistry.
The activation featured three bespoke 40-foot inflatable footballer replicas, each created specifically for FOX Sports’ 2026 World Cup campaign.
Air Artists recreated:
Each giant inflatable was carefully constructed to capture the player’s proportions and defining characteristics before being individually hand-painted to add depth, detail and realism.
The finished replicas were displayed at prominent locations across the United States, including Santa Monica Pier in California, Miami Beach in Florida, Holland in Michigan, Brazil in Indiana and Belgium in Wisconsin.
Air Artists managed the specialist creation of all three giant footballer replicas, transforming each player into a bespoke three-dimensional inflatable sculpture. Our team carefully developed the shape, proportions and defining characteristics required to recreate each footballer’s likeness at an extraordinary 40-foot scale.
Once constructed, every replica was individually hand-painted by our specialist artists. Unlike a flat printed finish, hand painting allowed our artists to work directly with the contours of each inflatable, using highlights, shadows and tonal variations to enhance its three-dimensional form.
Detailed shading around the faces, eyes, cheekbones, hair, clothing and bodies created a stronger sense of depth and dimension, helping define each player’s facial structure and giving the finished sculptures greater character and realism.
Painting at this scale also required careful consideration of how the artwork would appear once the inflatable was fully inflated and viewed from ground level. Every feature had to be accurately scaled and positioned across the curved surface to ensure the finished likeness remained convincing.
From facial expressions and hairstyles to folds, shadows and detailing within each national kit, the specialist hand-painted finish elevated the inflatables beyond conventional promotional replicas and transformed them into monumental pieces of inflatable portraiture.
The finished 40-foot footballer replicas became striking physical landmarks as they appeared at locations across the United States, bringing FOX Sports’ World Cup campaign directly to football fans and local communities.
At 40 feet tall, the three football stars were designed to command attention wherever they appeared. At Santa Monica Pier in California, the sculptures towered above the coastline, creating an unmistakable spectacle that attracted football fans, tourists and media attention.
The extraordinary scale and recognisable player likenesses encouraged visitors to photograph and film the installations.
This helped the activation extend beyond its physical locations, generating opportunities for social sharing, online conversation and wider media coverage as excitement built ahead of the tournament.
Like Air Artists’ wider range of sports inflatables, the installation demonstrates how large-scale inflatable designs can turn sporting campaigns into physical experiences that engage fans beyond the event itself.
The hand-painted finish played a major role in bringing each replica to life. Carefully applied highlights, shadows and tonal details worked with the three-dimensional inflatable forms to capture the defining features of Messi, Yamal and Pulisic, creating sculptures that remained recognisable even at their enormous scale.
By displaying the replicas at destinations including California, Florida, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin, FOX Sports brought a piece of the World Cup build-up directly into communities across the United States.
The project demonstrates how bespoke inflatable replicas and specialist hand-painted artistry can turn recognisable personalities into extraordinary large-scale installations.
By combining technical inflatable construction with detailed three-dimensional painting, Air Artists created three instantly recognisable footballer replicas that generated attention, encouraged fan interaction and supported FOX Sports’ 2026 World Cup campaign across the United States.

At Air Artists, we focus on creating installations that shape how audiences experience a space from the very beginning. For our collaboration with CAVALLUNA, the internationally touring horse show, the brief was to design an entrance that would immediately transport visitors into the world of the performance.
We created a 21 metre wide hand-painted inflatable rock gateway that transforms each arena into a mythical landscape as soon as audiences arrive. Rather than acting as a simple entry point, the structure works as a visual threshold, setting expectations and signalling that what lies beyond is something far removed from the everyday.
Air Artists worked with the talented artist duo, The Cameron Twins, to create a giant three-headed poodle as a custom inflatable sculpture—showcasing the impact of inflatable art, bespoke inflatables and large-scale inflatable installations.
Installed at Protein Studios the piece transformed a 2D illustration into a bold inflatable art installation, becoming a standout feature of the exhibition.
At Air Artists, we specialise in creating bespoke inflatables that transform live performances into unforgettable experiences. For the Scissor Sisters’ inflatable, created as part of their reunion and summer tour, our team designed something bold, playful and impossible to miss: a giant pair of iridescent inflatable scissors that dominated the stage.
When YUNGBLUD appeared at BLUDFEST, his presence extended far beyond the music. A towering inflatable character stood beside the stage, eyes wide, hair ablaze, wrapped in stylised flames and flanked by a skeletal figure. Hand-painted and impossible to ignore, it did more than decorate the space. It helped define the show’s atmosphere before a single note played.
This is how modern inflatables are redefining concert tour stage design. Lightweight, expressive and instantly iconic, they offer touring artists, creative directors and production teams an agile tool for building visual identity and emotional tone. For this project, Air Artists was tasked with creating a one-of-a-kind centrepiece that captured YUNGBLUD’s world in physical form.
When Netflix approached Air Artists to create a striking centrepiece for the launch of Squid Game Series 3, the result was a one-off installation that turned heads across Newcastle’s Quayside. Rather than producing repeatable designs, each inflatable was crafted as a bespoke artwork, made once for a single client and event.

Air Artists was born in 1976 by Rob Harries in a unique time where very few people knew much about inflatables.Â

They are bold, lightweight, transportable and able to transform a space without the heavy logistics of traditional scenic props. So, how are inflatables made when the […]
